The easiest American novel to emerge from global conflict I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable tale of an American ambulance driving force at the Italian entrance and his ardour for a gorgeous English nurse. Hemingway's frank portrayal of the affection among Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley, stuck within the inexorable sweep of conflict, glows with an depth unequalled in glossy literature, whereas his description of the German assault on Caporetto -- of strains of fired males marching within the rain, hungry, weary, and demoralized -- is likely one of the maximum moments in literary heritage. a narrative of affection and ache, of loyalty and desertion, A Farewell to Arms, written whilst he used to be 30 years previous, represents a brand new romanticism for Hemingway.
