The films, being transparent to the electron beam, were examined by both transmission microscopy and electron diffraction to identify microstructural features. Heating to about 200°C caused only the silver film to break up into islands.

The primary assumption in this formulation is that the mechanism of sintering for any given material at a given temperature is not size sensitive. There is some evidence to the contrary(8, 9) in the literature indicating that more complex mechanisms may become operative at very large)particle sizes (> 300 microns). However, recent work\IO has confirmed that in the range of particle sizes of 10 - 300 microns, the scaling laws are valid for copper and most likely for silver also. Deduction of mechanisms of mass transport from the "scaling" laws is subject to controversy also because published experimental results do not cover a large enough range of particle sizes to allow differentiation between a 3rd or 4th power relationship of A, the scale factor.
